What is 3D mammography?

“3D mammography” or Breast Tomosynthesis is the newest development in screening and diagnostic mammography. It is another tool designed to find, and help exclude early breast cancer. It is approved for all women who would be undergoing a standard mammogram, in both the screening and diagnostic settings, but is most useful for women with significant dense breast tissue. “3D mammography” complements standard 2D mammography and is performed at the same time with the same system. The total radiation dose is higher than 2D mammography, but it is still within the FDA safety standards for mammography. There is no additional compression required and the study takes a few more seconds in compression than a traditional mammogram.

How does it work?

3D captures multiple images of the breast at different angles. The images are then brought together to create reconstructed images of the breast. The radiologist is then able to review the reconstructions, one thin slice at a time, almost like turning pages in a book. This makes it easier for doctors to see if there is anything to be concerned about. In fact, studies show both a reduced need for follow-up imaging and improved cancer detection rate with “3D mammography” combination compared with 2D mammography.

What are the costs of a 3D Mammogram?

Currently, most insurance companies NOW cover the additional costs of equipment and interpretation time of a 3D Mammogram. For those few that don’t cover a 3D Mammogram you are responsible at the time of service for the additional $189 dollars. We are working with all insurance companies to bring this technology to all patients.
